“Do you know the really frightening thing with what’s going on here?” asked Sagan, sitting with the other two Americans in the garden, while waiting for the Arab rulers and Kim to join them at breakfast.

They tended to meet around breakfast, and to next be together again after dark, but the main part of the day would generally be spent apart, reserved for the rulers, including Kim, to look into the business of running their countries, while the Americans mostly lazed about in opulence and found ways to entertain themselves.

“You tell us,” said Gales.

“It is their sense of joy in rape, brutality and mayhem. They have not changed at all from the horrible, unjust beasts they were. Becoming immortal, in the way we are now deathless, means merely that there is no tiredness whatsoever for them, that there is no element of fatigue. Behaving bestially and being beastly is just an extension of being unthinking and uncaring juveniles; boys having fun, by causing suffering and inflicting pain. It could become very tiring and tiresome for us.

“It might even become revolting, considering the types of family and social backgrounds we come from. I could have a reaction, despite joining in and being like them in some disgusting out-of-character activities for unity’s sake. They could go on like this forever.”

Gales laughed. “They will go on forever, Patrick. It has begun, and whatever relief the world might get from the non-stop mischief of these two, and later more demons, will probably come only from us making some excuse or the other and holding them back inside the computer, like imprisonment, in places where they have killed everything and exhausted body pods, before transporting them to locations where they can get to stocks of new bodies.”

“It’ll have to be done very slyly,” said Grietzmann. “If they catch on, there’ll be hell to pay. But you’re right; there is probably no other way, no other system to regulate their excesses. I mean quantity of excess not types of excess, which are surely going to greater heights and more hellish depths. These people are going to be impossible to control.”

“You and Kim won’t get tired either. Could keep going, and adding to the quantity at the same speed as our Arab friends,” said Sagan.

“Look, Patrick,” said Grietzmann “The difference between people like us and these rulers is that they have never achieved anything in life. In fact, they have never even worked towards achieving anything at all. What do I mean?

“We went to school and college and studied to get ahead in life, preparing ourselves to be better than others, in a future where nothing could be taken for granted. It was the same on the playing field, football, baseball and everything else. And then it was the same when we were trying to get girlfriends, always trying to somehow be better and more desirable than others. Competing, always competing. That made us the persons we now are, and deathlessness is to be an opportunity to continue being the persons we were.
